The National Epidemic

“No other disease or condition of companion animals takes as many lives as euthanasia. In fact, no other disease comes close.”
Janet M. Scarlett, DVM, MPH, PhD, Cornell University

THERE IS A NATIONAL CONSENSUS

Fundamental to all preventative work is sterilization. Neutering is recognized as our best defense against all sources of shelter overpopulation.

The solution to the stray, abandoned, and unwanted companion animal dilemma is this: Only by implementing widespread sterilization programs, only by spaying and neutering all companion animals, will we get a handle on pet overpopulation.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic is to provide targeted, high-volume, high-quality, low-cost sterilization services as the non-lethal solution to the companion pet overpopulation dilemma.

OUR PLAN

The solution has been identified, sterilization. To address this epidemic nationally, the Humane Alliance has created the National Spay/Neuter Response Team (NSNRT).

OUR VISION

The vision of the NSNRT is strategic placement and implementation of targeted, high-volume, high-quality, low- cost spay/neuter clinics nationwide.

THE CHALLENGE: IMPLEMENTATION

In this country, we spend a minimum of one billion dollars annually to pick-up, house, and destroy companion animals. If only 5% of that one billion were allocated to spay/neuter, we could open 250 clinics across the nation, and sterilize more than four million companion animals every year. This necessary next step would end euthanasia as the current solution to the pet overpopulation dilemma.

The NSNRT is a strategic training program designed by Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter clinic to address a national epidemic; "There is no disease or condition of companion animals that takes as many of their lives as euthanasia", Janet M. Scarlett, DVM, Associate Professor Of Epidemiology at Cornell University. The vision is the strategic placement of this spay/neuter model across the nation. Clearly, our nation's best defense against all of the sources of shelter intake is targeted, aggressive, high-volume, high-quality, low-cost sterilization. This is an urgent need that will require a skilled, dedicated and well-organized team to train organizations to open and operate strategically placed high-volume, high-quality, low-cost spay/neuter clinics across the nation.

The National Spay/Neuter Response Team recognizes that the greatest challenge over the next 5 years is IMPLEMENTATION of models that work. This model consists of a team which is made up of the Humane Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic staff. This team is committed to the fundamental responsibility to assure that the full resources of the group are effectively utilized to achieve the successful duplication of high-volume, high-quality, targeted, low-cost spay/neuter clinics across the country. The goal is that the trainees will become creative collaborators and participants in the national program. Each new clinic becomes a steward of the vision/program.

The National Spay/Neuter Response Team is sponsored in part by PETsMART Charities and in part by The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
